Frequently asked questions
- What barcode format do VIN labels use?
- Most vehicle labels encode the VIN as Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9), a 1D barcode that supports the letters and digits a VIN uses. Some newer labels add a Data Matrix or QR code next to it.
- Why does the generator warn about the check digit?
- The 9th character of a VIN is a check digit calculated from the other 16. It is required on vehicles built for North America. Many vehicles built for other markets do not use it, so the barcode is still generated, with a warning.
- What is a random test VIN?
- A made-up VIN with a correct format and check digit, useful for testing barcode scanners, label printers and VIN input forms. It is not looked up against or tied to any real vehicle.
- Can I scan the barcode back into a VIN?
- Yes. The free VIN scanner reads VIN barcodes and printed VINs from a photo, and the VIN OCR API does the same inside your own app.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The barcode is drawn in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
