A Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a 12 or 15-character serial number uniquely identifying a marine vessel. It is typically found engraved on the upper right corner of the boat's transom.

The MIC is the first three characters of a HIN and uniquely identifies the boat manufacturer. Our OCR extracts and returns the MIC as a separate structured field, enabling automated manufacturer lookup without additional parsing.

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) identifies land vehicles and follows NHTSA standards. A HIN identifies marine vessels and follows ISO 10087 or US Coast Guard standards. Both are 17 characters in their full forms, but their structure and checksum algorithms differ. We offer dedicated scanners for both.
